Project Milestones
The original Jordan Bridge, then called the Norfolk Portsmouth Bridge, opens to traffic. The vertical-lift drawbridge cost $1.25 million to build. August 1928
A non-profit, South Norfolk Bridge Commission, was created to manage the bridge. January 1944
Ownership and maintenance were transferred over to the City of Chesapeake.June 1977
Due to structural deterioration and lack of funding for repairs, bridge use is permanently suspended.November 2008
Plans for a new, privately funded bridge are approved by Chesapeake City Council. January 2009
Virginia Senate Bill 1550 grants the replacement of the Jordan Bridge
February 2009
First Pier segment installed. June 2011
The new South Norfolk Jordan Bridge opens to traffic. October 2012
South Norfolk Jordan Bridge commemorates ten years of serving as the Norfolk regions’ reliable shortcut, providing nearly 27 million crossings since opening. October 2022
