Construction
The project began November 8, 2010, and the completed bridge opened to traffic on Monday, October 29, 2012.
A total of 833 concrete segments were pre-cast for the South Norfolk Jordan Bridge (SNJB) and stored in the casting yard until installed.
Column segments weigh approximately 30 – 50 tons each; superstructure segments weigh approximately 70 – 90 tons each. Each span is approximately 150’ in length, but the main channel span is 370’ long.
The navigational clearances include 145’ in height and 270’ across the Elizabeth River channel.
The SNJB is 5,375’ in length from end to end, or approximately one mile. Markers are posted on the Walkway in 1/4-mile increments.
The project was entirely paid for by private industry and American investors. No city, state or federal tax dollars were used for its construction or to support its ongoing operation and maintenance.
