Summer Solar Eclipse: August 21, 2017

eclipseAre you ready for this summer's total solar eclipse? On Monday, August 21st, the moon will pass in front of the sun over North America and provide one of the most awe-insipiring sights in nature. Although Hampton Roads isn't in the path of total darkness, we are expected to experience an 85% obscurity of the sun in the afternoon hours. Even without totality, it's important to take safety precautions if you plan on viewing the eclipse:

Do not look directly at the sun! The sun's powerful rays, even when partially obscured, can cause irreversible damage to your eyes. You should view the event through special-purpose solar filters such as "eclipse glasses" or handheld solar viewers. Sunglasses and camera/binocular lenses do not adequately protect the human eye from direct viewing of the sun.

Find a safe viewing spot. Local visibility of the eclipse will begin around 1:15 pm and continue until just after 4:00 pm ET with peak obscurity occuring around 2:45 pm. The popularity of this event is expected to draw many outdoors to experience it first-hand, but presents a giant overhead distraction. Choose a safe spot to sit and view the event --our Pedestrian Walkway will be open! Don't try to view the phenomenon while walking or driving, and always remain alert to your surroundings.

In anticipation of the big day, you may also want to visit NASA's Total Eclipse website for more information on the scientific event, history, maps and art projects including a DIY solar viewer. If local weather is uncooperative and cloudy, the website also includes a link to live streaming video of the eclipse from NASA television and locations across the country. You may also visit the Chesapeake Planetarium for a special viewing of "Total Solar Eclipse" at 8:00 pm on Thursdays, August 17, 24 and 31, 2017.  No matter how you view it, don't miss this astronomical event that is the first of its kind in 99 years!
